Can a Ford Ranger tow a travel trailer?

Quick answer

Yes, a smaller one. A properly equipped 2026 Ford Ranger (XL, XLT or Lariat) is rated to tow up to 7,500 lbs, and the Ranger Raptor up to 5,510 lbs. In practice, payload runs out before the tow rating does. For most families, a Ranger is a good match for a light travel trailer that weighs about 6,000 lbs or less fully loaded.

I spent years selling RVs before I sold Fords. One of the most common things I saw was a customer who had fallen in love with a travel trailer, then pulled up in a Ford Ranger expecting it to tow. Sometimes it could. Often it couldn't, at least not safely. This guide is what I wish every one of those customers had read first.

The short version: the numbers Ford publishes

These are the maximum ratings for the 2026 Ranger lineup. Your specific truck may be lower depending on how it's equipped, so always check the actual vehicle.

Why the tow rating isn't the whole story

The 7,500-lb rating answers one question: how heavy a trailer can the truck pull. It doesn't tell you how much weight the truck can carry, and towing puts weight on the truck. That's where payload comes in.

Payload is everything in or on the truck: you, your passengers, the dog, the cooler, the gear in the bed, the weight-distribution hitch, and the trailer's tongue weight. Tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's loaded weight. On a midsize truck, payload is almost always the first limit you hit.

A real-world example

Here's the math for a common scenario: a family of four with a travel trailer whose GVWR (the maximum loaded weight on its sticker) is 6,500 lbs.

What's on the truckWeight
Tongue weight (10 to 15% of 6,500 lbs)650 to 975 lbs
Two adults and two kidsabout 500 lbs
Gear in the bed and cababout 150 lbs
Weight-distribution hitchabout 90 lbs
Total payload used1,390 to 1,715 lbs

The trailer is well under the 7,500-lb tow rating. But 1,390 to 1,715 lbs is at or over the payload of many Rangers, because the 1,788-lb maximum only applies to certain builds. The payload number for any specific truck is printed on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb. That's the number to use.

My rule of thumb

Here's what I tell customers. It's my own guideline, not an official Ford rule:

  1. Use the trailer's GVWR, not its dry weight. Dry weight is the trailer empty. Nobody camps with an empty trailer.
  2. Keep the loaded trailer at about 80% of the tow rating. For a properly equipped Ranger, that's roughly 6,000 lbs.
  3. Add up your payload. Tongue weight plus people, gear and hitch has to stay under the number on the door sticker.
  4. Think about where you'll drive. Flat highway is one thing. Arizona grades are another.

Why Arizona makes this harder

Towing in Arizona means long climbs in the heat. Heading north out of Phoenix on I-17, you climb for miles toward Sunset Point. Highway 89 up Yarnell Hill toward Prescott is steep and winding. A truck at the edge of its limits will work hard, run hot and feel unstable in crosswinds on those roads.

A tall travel trailer is also like a sail. Even if the weight is within limits, wind on open stretches of highway pushes a light truck around more than a heavy one. That margin is why I recommend staying well under the maximums.

So which trailers make sense with a Ranger?

Many lightweight travel trailers, teardrops, small hybrid campers and pop-ups fit comfortably. Larger travel trailers often don't, even when the brochure says they're "half-ton towable" or "midsize friendly." If your loaded trailer is getting close to 6,000 lbs, or your payload math is tight, look at an F-150 with the right towing package instead.

What to bring me if you're shopping

  • A photo of your trailer's weight sticker (usually near the front, on the left side)
  • The trailer's length and whether it's a bumper pull or fifth wheel
  • Who and what usually rides in the truck
  • Where you plan to tow it

Send me those and I'll tell you honestly whether a Ranger will do the job, or whether you need more truck. Sometimes the answer is that the truck you already own is fine.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the 2026 Ford Ranger's max towing capacity?

Ford rates the 2026 Ranger XL, XLT and Lariat at up to 7,500 lbs when properly equipped with the available Trailer Tow Package. The Ranger Raptor is rated at up to 5,510 lbs.

Why does payload matter for towing?

The trailer's tongue weight sits on the truck and counts against payload, along with passengers, gear and the hitch. On a midsize truck, that total often reaches the payload limit before the trailer reaches the tow rating.

How big a travel trailer can a Ranger pull?

As a rule of thumb, I tell customers to keep the trailer's loaded weight at about 80% of the tow rating, which is roughly 6,000 lbs for a properly equipped Ranger. Then check payload. Many lightweight travel trailers fit; many larger ones do not.

Should I use the trailer's dry weight?

No. Dry weight is the trailer empty, as it left the factory. Use the GVWR on the trailer's sticker, or weigh it loaded. Water, propane, food and gear add up quickly.
