2026 Ford F-150 towing capacity, by engine

Quick answer

A properly equipped 2026 Ford F-150 can tow up to 13,500 lbs with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6. The 5.0L V8 is rated up to 12,800 lbs, the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid up to 11,600 lbs, and the 2.7L EcoBoost up to 8,400 lbs. The Raptor is rated at 8,200 lbs and the Raptor R at 8,700 lbs. Those are maximums for specific builds; the engine, axle ratio and tow package on a specific truck decide its real rating.

The F-150 is the truck I point most travel trailer owners toward, but “an F-150 can tow 13,500 lbs” is only true for some of them. The engine, the axle ratio and the towing package make a big difference. Here are the 2026 numbers and how to read them.

Maximum ratings from Ford’s 2026 specs and RV & Trailer Towing Guide, for properly equipped trucks. The highest ratings need the right tow package and axle ratio.

Why two F-150s with the same engine can tow differently

Those numbers are ceilings. A specific truck’s rating depends on its cab and bed, 4x2 or 4x4, the axle ratio and the towing package. Two 3.5L EcoBoost trucks sitting next to each other on the lot can be rated thousands of pounds apart. When you’re shopping for a tow vehicle, I look up the rating for the exact truck, not the brochure maximum.

Payload: the number that runs out first

Ford rates the 2026 F-150 at up to 2,440 lbs of payload with the 3.5L EcoBoost, but that’s for one specific build. Many well-optioned crew cab trucks are closer to 1,500 to 1,800 lbs. Tongue weight from your trailer (usually 10 to 15 percent of its loaded weight), your passengers, gear and hitch all count against it.

A loaded 8,500-lb travel trailer puts roughly 850 to 1,275 lbs on the hitch. Add a family and some gear and you can use up most of a typical F-150’s payload long before you reach its tow rating. Always check the yellow sticker in the driver’s door jamb.

My rule of thumb

  1. Use the trailer’s GVWR, the maximum loaded weight on its sticker, not the dry weight.
  2. Keep it around 80% of the truck’s tow rating. That leaves margin for grades, heat and wind.
  3. Add up payload: tongue weight, people, gear and hitch, under the door-sticker number.
  4. Plan for Arizona. Long climbs like I-17 out of the Valley and Yarnell Hill work a truck hard in the summer heat.

Which travel trailers fit an F-150?

Most bumper-pull travel trailers fit a properly equipped F-150. A few real floor plans I sell, with their published GVWR:

  • R-Pod RP-153, 4,524 lbs: easy, even with a 2.7L.
  • Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108DS, 5,500 lbs: comfortable with any F-150 engine.
  • R-Pod RP-206, 6,229 lbs: a good fit with the right equipment.
  • Rockwood Ultra Lite 2606WS, 8,542 lbs: a strong match for a 3.5L EcoBoost or 5.0L truck rated well above it. Check payload.

Heavy fifth wheels are a different story. Their pin weight usually calls for a Super Duty. See the travel trailers I sell or the F-150 trims and specs.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the 2026 F-150's max towing capacity?

Up to 13,500 lbs, with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and the right towing equipment and axle ratio.

Which F-150 engine is best for towing?

For heavy travel trailers, the 3.5L EcoBoost has the highest rating and big torque for grades. The 5.0L V8 is close behind. The PowerBoost hybrid tows well and adds onboard generator power. The 2.7L is fine for lighter trailers.

How much can the F-150 hybrid tow?

Ford's 2026 towing guide rates the 3.5L PowerBoost full hybrid at up to 11,600 lbs when properly equipped.

How much can an F-150 Raptor tow?

The 2026 F-150 Raptor is rated at 8,200 lbs and the Raptor R at 8,700 lbs. They're built for off-road performance, not maximum towing.

What's the max payload on a 2026 F-150?

Up to 2,440 lbs with the 3.5L EcoBoost on the right configuration. Most F-150s are rated lower; the number for a specific truck is on the driver's door jamb sticker.
