The Expedition is Ford’s full-size SUV: three rows people can actually sit in, real cargo space, and properly equipped, a tow rating that rivals a half-ton truck.
It’s the vehicle I point families toward when they want to tow a travel trailer but don’t want a pickup. The kids ride inside, the gear rides behind them, and the trailer rides behind that.

Expedition or Expedition MAX? The MAX is about a foot longer, with far more room behind the third row. If all three rows are full most of the time, the MAX is worth it. If you tow near the limit, note the regular Expedition 4x4 has the higher rating.
The Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package and 4x4 are what get you to 9,600 lbs. A 4x2 Expedition is rated at 6,000 lbs. Payload matters too: a full family plus the trailer’s tongue weight adds up quickly, so check the door sticker.

Good fit: GVWR at or under 80% of the max tow rating (my rule of thumb). Tight: under the rating without much margin. Over: above it. Compared against the Expedition’s maximum rating; your vehicle may be rated lower, and payload has to be checked separately.

How much can the Ford Expedition tow?
Up to 9,600 lbs for the Expedition 4x4 with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, and 9,000 lbs for the Expedition MAX 4x4. Two-wheel-drive models are rated at 6,000 lbs (Expedition) and 6,300 lbs (MAX).
Expedition or F-150 for towing a travel trailer?
Both can tow similar trailers. The Expedition carries the family inside and keeps gear out of the weather. The F-150 has more payload and a bed for bikes and firewood. With a full crew and a heavy trailer, payload often tips it toward the F-150.
What’s the difference between the Expedition and the Expedition MAX?
The MAX is about 12 inches longer, with 37.4 cu ft behind the third row versus 22.9 cu ft. It’s the better choice when the third row is always full.
How many people does the Expedition seat?
Up to eight. Active models seat eight standard; other trims seat seven, with an available second-row bench for eight, except King Ranch.
