2026 Ford Ranger towing capacity, by trim and engine

Quick answer

The 2026 Ford Ranger XL, XLT and Lariat are rated to tow up to 7,500 lbs with either the 2.3L or 2.7L EcoBoost, but only with the available Trailer Tow Package. Without it, the limit is 3,500 lbs. The Ranger Raptor is rated at 5,510 lbs, with its tow package standard. In practice, payload usually runs out before the tow rating, so for most families a Ranger fits a travel trailer of about 6,000 lbs or less fully loaded.

“How much can a Ranger tow?” is one of the questions I hear most. I spent years selling RVs before I sold Fords, and I watched a lot of people show up with a Ranger and a trailer that didn’t belong together. Here are the real 2026 numbers, by trim and engine, and how to tell whether your trailer fits.

The Trailer Tow Package is the big one

This is the detail that trips people up. A 2026 Ranger without the Trailer Tow Package is limited to 3,500 lbs. Two Rangers can look identical on the lot and have very different towing limits. If you plan to tow a travel trailer, make sure the truck you buy has the package. I’ll confirm it on the window sticker with you.

Payload by engine: where the Ranger really runs out

The tow rating tells you how heavy a trailer the truck can pull. Payload tells you how much weight the truck can carry, and towing puts weight on the truck. Here’s Ford’s published payload for SuperCrew Rangers:

2026 Ranger SuperCrewMax towingPayload
2.3L EcoBoost, 4x27,500 lbs1,767 lbs
2.3L EcoBoost, 4x47,500 lbs1,763 lbs
2.7L EcoBoost V6, 4x47,500 lbs1,375 lbs
Raptor, 3.0L EcoBoost V65,510 lbs1,373 lbs

Ford’s advertised maximums. Options reduce payload; the real number for a specific truck is on the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb.

Notice the 2.7L. It’s the better engine for climbing grades, but it gives up close to 400 lbs of payload compared to the 2.3L. If you’re towing a heavier trailer with a full crew, that matters.

Ranger Raptor towing capacity

The Ranger Raptor is rated at 5,510 lbs, with the tow package standard, and about 1,373 lbs of payload. It trades towing for long-travel suspension and big all-terrain tires. It will happily pull a small trailer, dirt bikes or a side-by-side, but if towing a travel trailer is a priority, a regular Ranger with the tow package, or an F-150, is a better tool.

A real-world example

Here’s the math for a common scenario: a family of four with a travel trailer whose GVWR (the maximum loaded weight on its sticker) is 6,500 lbs.

What’s on the truckWeight
Tongue weight (10 to 15% of 6,500 lbs)650 to 975 lbs
Two adults and two kidsabout 500 lbs
Gear in the bed and cababout 150 lbs
Weight-distribution hitchabout 90 lbs
Total payload used1,390 to 1,715 lbs

The trailer is well under the 7,500-lb tow rating. But 1,390 to 1,715 lbs is at or over the payload of most Rangers. With a 2.7L 4x4 rated around 1,375 lbs, it’s over before you load the cooler.

My rule of thumb

Here’s what I tell customers. It’s my own guideline, not an official Ford rule:

  1. Use the trailer’s GVWR, not its dry weight. Dry weight is the trailer empty. Nobody camps with an empty trailer.
  2. Keep the loaded trailer at about 80% of the tow rating. For a properly equipped Ranger, that’s roughly 6,000 lbs.
  3. Add up your payload. Tongue weight plus people, gear and hitch has to stay under the number on the door sticker.
  4. Think about where you’ll drive. Flat highway is one thing. Arizona grades are another.

Why Arizona makes this harder

Towing in Arizona means long climbs in the heat. Heading north out of Phoenix on I-17, you climb for miles toward Sunset Point. Highway 89 up Yarnell Hill toward Prescott is steep and winding. A truck at the edge of its limits will work hard, run hot and feel unstable in crosswinds on those roads.

A tall travel trailer is also like a sail. Even if the weight is within limits, wind on open stretches of highway pushes a light truck around more than a heavy one. That margin is why I recommend staying well under the maximums.

Which travel trailers fit a Ranger?

I sell travel trailers too, so here are a few real floor plans with their published GVWR:

  • R-Pod RP-153, 4,524 lbs GVWR: a comfortable fit for a properly equipped Ranger.
  • Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108DS, 5,500 lbs GVWR: fits under my 6,000-lb guideline. Check payload.
  • R-Pod RP-206, 6,229 lbs GVWR: under the rating, but tight. Payload math decides it.
  • Rockwood Ultra Lite 2606WS, 8,542 lbs GVWR: over the Ranger’s rating. This is F-150 territory.

See the travel trailers I sell or the Ranger’s trims and specs. If your loaded trailer is getting close to 6,000 lbs, or your payload math is tight, look at an F-150 instead.

What to bring me if you’re shopping

  • A photo of your trailer’s weight sticker (usually near the front, on the left side)
  • The trailer’s length and whether it’s a bumper pull or fifth wheel
  • Who and what usually rides in the truck
  • Where you plan to tow it

Send me those and I’ll tell you honestly whether a Ranger will do the job, or whether you need more truck. Sometimes the answer is that the truck you already own is fine.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the 2026 Ford Ranger's max towing capacity?

Up to 7,500 lbs for the XL, XLT and Lariat with the available Trailer Tow Package, with either the 2.3L or 2.7L EcoBoost. The Ranger Raptor is rated at up to 5,510 lbs.

How much can a 2026 Ranger tow without the tow package?

Ford limits bumper-only towing to 3,500 lbs. To tow more, up to the 7,500-lb maximum, the truck needs the Trailer Tow Package.

What is the 2026 Ranger XLT towing capacity?

The XLT is rated up to 7,500 lbs with the Trailer Tow Package, the same as the XL and Lariat. The rating doesn't change between the 2.3L and 2.7L engines, but payload does.

What is the 2026 Ranger Raptor towing capacity?

5,510 lbs, with the tow package standard. The Raptor gives up some towing and payload for its off-road suspension and tires.

Does the 2.7L V6 Ranger tow more than the 2.3L?

No, both are rated at 7,500 lbs. The 2.7L makes more power and torque, which helps on long Arizona grades, but Ford's published payload for the 2.7L 4x4 SuperCrew is lower: about 1,375 lbs vs. about 1,763 lbs for the 2.3L 4x4.

Should I use the trailer's dry weight?

No. Dry weight is the trailer empty, as it left the factory. Use the GVWR on the trailer's sticker, or weigh it loaded. Water, propane, food and gear add up quickly.
